Barça loses to Chelsea on penaltiesJuly 29, 2015
Barcelona’s last match during their short tour of the United States took place in the early hours of this morning, Tuesday evening in Washington DC. The match was played against Chelsea, coached by Barça nemesis Jose Mourinho.
Chelsea opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Hazard beat the Barça defence to put the ball into the net. Despite going a goal down the Catalans looked sluggish and it wasn’t until towards the end of the first half that they seemed to wake up, while Chelsea failed to make the most of multiple opportunities. Barça’s first goal came after the break, when Suarez scored after Chelsea failed to clear the ball from the area. And minutes later Sandro put Barcelona ahead.
As the clock counted down towards the end of the match it was looking as though Barcelona had clinched the match. Cahill changed the course of the match though when he headed the ball into the net, although he also sustained a punch to the nose from goalkeeper Jordi Masip who attempted to deflect the ball with his fist. With bllod flowing freely, Cahill went off and at the end of ninety minutes the match went to penalties. With Chelsea putting all their spot kicks home, Barça managed just two and the win went to the London club.
It is early days for FC Barcelona, which played the US tour without Messi or Neymar, and they still have plenty of time to get into shape before any serious football is played. Barcelona’s next match is on Sunday in Florence, when they play the last match in the International Champions Cup against Fiorentina.
1-0 Hazard (min 9)
1-1 Suárez (min 51)
1-2 Sandro (min 65)
2-2 Cahill (min 84)
