Barça takes Spanish Supercup with 5-0 aggregate winAugust 18, 2016
After Sunday night’s 2-0 away win against Sevilla in the Spanish Supercup, FC Barcelona had the clear advantage going into the return leg. However, that didn’t stop Sevilla from going all out right from the start to try and make up for their goal deficit. In the first few minutes they looked dangerous.
However, just 10 minutes in Arda Turan scored the opener for Barça off an assist by Leo Messi and Sevilla’s job was suddenly looking much more difficult. They had a good chance at the 32 minute mark when awarded a penalty for handball, but Claudio Bravo correctly anticipated the ball and so it turned out to be a wasted opportunity for the guests. And they came close just before the break when the ball ricocheted off the crossbar.
The second half saw Sevilla’s chances evaporate further when Arda Turan scored his second of the night from a shot even he couldn’t believe went in. At thet point the Sevilla keeper, Sergio Rico, just looked like he wanted to go home. Ten minutes later Messi scored Barcelona’s third to win the title with a 5-0 aggregate score.
Luis Enrique rested a number of players, including Luis Suarez and Gerard Pique, in anticipation of their opening league match on Saturday and so it was a comfortable win with the new players seeming to settle in well. Messi also looked to be in good form. However Javier Mascherano hobbled off the pitch with a leg injury and has been ruled out of the match against Betis. He is expected to be out for a week.
