Catalans thrash Celtic in Champions League openerSeptember 14, 2016
Barcelona opened their Champions League last night in spectacular style with a 7-0 home win against Celtic. The team bounced back completely after the weekend’s disappointing loss against lowly Alaves and overwhelmed the Scots completely. Messi scored a hat-trick in what turned out to be Celtic’s worst ever defeat in a European competition.
Messi opened for Barça just three minutes into the match off a Neymar assist. Celtic’s best chance came in the 23rd minute after Ter Stegen was shown a yellow card for a foul on Moussa Dembele, who saw his penalty saved by the Barcelona keeper. Soon after Messi scored his second of the night off another Neymar assist.
Going into the break things were looking pretty bad for Celtic. However, little could that have believed what was in store for them in the second half. After two assists, Neymar kicked a free kick 20 metres out that went over Celtic’s wall and into the goal. Neymar then assisted with Iniesta’s goal just before the hour mark, talking the score to 4-0 and putting the slim chance Celtic had of turning things around completely out of reach.
But Barça still hadn’t finished. This time it was Suarez who provided the assist for Messi’s hat-trick right on the hour. Finally, Suarez scored the final two goals of the match with 15 minutes and 2 minutes remaining on the clock. The first was another Neymar assist, the second set up by Leo Messi. Once again Barcelona put on a football masterclass.
