Draw against Bayer LeverkusenDecember 10, 2015
With their place in the last 16 already assured, Barcelona had nothing to lose going into their match against Bayer Leverkusen last night. And with Neymar and a handful other other players either injured, or in the case of Dani Alves serving a suspension, and with a number of other first team regulars sitting it out on the bench, this was far from a full strength squad.
However, Messi started the match as he continues to get back to full fitness, opening the scoring after 19 minutes assisted by Rakitic. That lead only lasted three minutes though when Chicharito Hernández equalised from inside the area.
While the outcome of the match was of no material relevance to the Catalans, that was not true of the Germans. With the second place in Group E still to play for Leverkusen needed to go for a win. However, with Roma drawing at home and the hosts unable to do enough to make it past Ter Stegen they had to make do with third place.
0-1 Messi (min 19)
1-1 Hernández (min 22)
