Messi makes it 10,000 as Barcelona sees off ArsenalFebruary 24, 2016
Last night Barcelona went a long way to securing their place in this year’s Champions League quarter-finals. The 2-0 win at Emirates Stadium was a hard fought battle against The Gunners that saw Leo Messi score the 10,000th goal in club history. Despite high possession throughout most of the match, it was far from a walkover for the Catalan club. Arsenal came close to scoring on a number of occasions but unable to make the most of those opportunities as they arose.
But Barcelona was also missing out on opportunities too. Suarez had a great opportunity to score the opener but passed to Messi instead and nothing came of it. And just before the break his header off a pass from Alves went wide. A few minutes into the second half Neymar had a great opportunity too. However it wasn’t to be and his shot from the centre of the box was saved by Arsenal keeper Petr Cech.
Finally, with 20 minutes to go, Neymar sped into the Arsenal area and passed to Messi. The Argentine put into the net and FC Barcelona into the lead. Minutes later Suarez almost scored, assisted by Neymar and Messi, and then again with an assist by Busquets. But within seconds of Mathieu Flamini coming on for The Gunners he brought down Messi in the box. Kicking from the penalty spot, Messi put the ball into the back of the net for Barcelona’s 10,000th goal and putting any hope that remained for Arsenal out of reach.
While the job isn’t done yet the Catalans have a huge advantage going into the return leg on 16th March as they continue their aim of retaining the Champions League title.
