Neymar goals help seal Champions League semi-final for Barça

April 22, 2015

Two first half goals from Neymar ensured FC Barcelona’s place in the Champions League semi-final after a 2-0 home win against Paris St-Germain put the Catalans through 5-1 on aggregate. Even with Zlatan Ibrahimovic back for the visitors, PSG were unable to get into the match enough to overturn Barcelona’s huge advantage.

The first goal came 13 minutes in, when Iniesta went forward with the ball into PSG’s half and after working his way past a number of French players passed to Neymar, who put the ball into the net. PSG tried to strike back immediately, but although Ibrahimovic put the ball into the net he was clearly offside. The second and last goal of the match came 20 minutes after the first when Neymar headed the ball into the PSG goal off a cross from Dani Alves.

The game was effectively won for Barça, with just too much to do for PSG. Off came Iniesta, with Xavi coming on in his place and Sergi Roberto came on in place of Busquets and finally Pedro Rodríguez brought on in place of Suarez for the last quarter hour. Barça’s pace was much slower in the second half, perhaps conserving energy for the counter-attack, but PSG made a couple of attempts on the goal, with Ter Stegen called in to stop an attempt on the goal by Ibrahimovic, but really the crowd was counting down to the final whistle and confirmation of a place once more in the semi-final.
