Victory in Paris sets Barça up for Champions League semisApril 16, 2015
Barcelona went a long way to cementing their place in the Champions LEague semi-finals this season with a 3-1 win against Paris Saint-Germain in Paris. Barça’s win was particularly galling for the French side as it is their first home loss this season.
Barcelona outplayed PSG throughout and it was perhaps surprising the first half ended with just a single goal, scored by Neymar in the 17th minute. The home side were without former Barça man Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while captain Thiago Silva was forced to retire from the match due to injury soon after.
Back on after the break PSG came on with a renewed sense of purpose, but Ter Stegen saved the day. Xavi was brught on when Iniesta was stretchered off after a knee in the back saw him writhe in agony, but initial fears about his injury gave way to relief when Luis Enrique revealed after the match that no series damage had been done.
If it was anyone’s second half, that person was Luis Suarez, who has now scored 13 goals in 15 matches. His first came 22 minutes into the second half to out Barça 2-0 ahead and then 12 minutes later his second, putting hopes of the semi-final further from PSG’s grasp. The last goal of the night came three minutes later when Van del Wiel attacked the Barça goal. Mathieu triaed to clear it but instead put it into his own net.
The result clearly puts Barcelona in the driving seat for the return leg at the Nou Camp next Tuesday.
