Barcelona’s Youngsters End the Season in Style

May 23rd, 2011
We have FC Barcelona tickets for all competitions at the Nou Camp

FC Barcelona added extra gloss to a memorable campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory at Málaga on Saturday evening. Pep Guardiola rested his established stars once again, offering yet another tantalising taste of Barcelona’s future, as Bojan, Afellay and Bartra all got on the scoresheet.

In amongst a handful of Barça B stars were Adriano and Abidal, enjoying vital game-time in the build-up to next Saturday’s big game at Wembley. Málaga, on the other hand, were without their usual strikeforce of Baptista and Rondón, while Argentine defender Demichelis was also missing for Los Boquerones.

The first half was a relatively quiet affair. Barcelona’s young midfield, composed of Andreu Fontàs, Sergi Roberto and Thiago Alcántara, took some time to find its feet before settling after about 20 minutes – Jeffrén got clear, but his effort was well saved by Caballero.

And just as Barcelona had started to assert control, Málaga took a surprise lead; a long, raking pass was cut back from the goal line by Juanmi into the path of Sebastián Fernández, whose shot squirmed beneath Pinto in the Barça goal.

Barcelona’s response was almost immediate. Bojan, captain for the day, showed maturity and guile as he bought a foul from Eliseu in the area, much to the protestations of Málaga’s Portuguese midfielder – and the home fans. Barça’s 20 year-old striker dispatched the penalty calmly to level the match just before the break.

As might be expected for a match of little consequence, the second 45 minutes was played out at a relatively low pace, but Barcelona continued to circulate the ball in a style fitting of the club, and continued to create chances in an unforgiving atmosphere.

Jeffrén almost scored a minute after the restart, skipping down the right flank only to angle his low effort into the side netting at the near post. When Barcelona did take the lead it was nothing short of spectacular.

Sergi Roberto drove the ball over to Ibrahim Afellay, who cut inside the defender onto his right-foot 30 yards from goal and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the bottom-right corner.

Dani Alves, Pedro Rodríguez and Javier Mascherano were all introduced, affording Barcelona a little more experience. And it was the diminutive Brazilian right-back who provided the assist for the third goal. His corner was met by young defender Marc Bartra with a towering leap, guiding a perfect header into the top right corner.

In the closing minutes of the match both sets of fans at La Rosaleda registered their appreciation for veteran goalkeeper Cesc Arnau, who was brought on just before full time to play make the final professional appearance of his career. Arnau came through at the ranks at Barcelona, serving as a backup for a number of years before heading for the Costa del Sol a decade ago.

Barcelona’s gaze now turns to Wembley, where Guardiola’s men can emulate Cruyff’s European Cup-winning Dream Team of 1992.

Barça takes 3 points against Getafe

March 21st, 2011

Over the course of the last few years fans from around the world have clamoured to adopt Barça as their own team – FC Barcelona was a guaranteed source of goals, emotions and aesthetics. Yet, during the last few matches it is also true that Barça had to learn a new skill; it had to learn how to suffer.

For instance, a couple of weeks ago during the second leg of the Champions League playoffs against Arsenal, after playing a marvellous match, Mascherano made an amazing intervention in the final minute when Bendtner was just about to score the second goal for the 2-3, which would have meant elimination for Barcelona. This weekend, in the Camp Nou, for the 29th round of the Spanish League, the story was pretty much the same.

FC Barcelona built another excellent performance, full of good passes, ball circulation and beauty.  Dani Alves scored an awesome goal (a superb half-volley) and Bojan, on his 100th Liga appearance, scored the second. But the final score line was 2-1 against a humble Getafe.  The final score doesn’t paint the complete picture of course, but we all know that football results are not logical, and Getafe could have drawn the match in the last minute. Reasons for that?

The first cause is the lack of effectiveness of the forwards, specifically Villa’s bad aim, and the fact that Messi also seems to have broken off his ‘friendship’ with the goal. But, it has to be said; Mr Muñiz Fernández (the referee) played his part in this story, as he did not see two clear penalties in the first half.  The final feeling is the FC Barcelona just has to put the finishing touches to it and close the matches earlier, so as to avoid this undeserved suffering.

FC Barcelona has also established a new record; 27 consecutive games without losing in the League, surpassing the record from the 1973/74 season (26).

As Real Madrid won its derby against Atletico, the gap between the two giants remains at five points.  It’s really a very useful difference to keep optimistic and face the challenging last part of the tournament, which includes a direct duel at the Bernabéu.

And the future is not only showing this duel for the Spanish League.  The Champions League draws conducted at UEFA offices last Friday established a possible semi-final involving these two same opponents who are already facing each other in the Copa del Rey final on April 20th.

Barcelona in Test at Defiant Sevilla

March 14th, 2011

FC Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw on Sunday night against a tough-tackling Sevilla team in one of most thrilling encounters of the season. Pep Guardiola’s men took the lead through Bojan before being pegged back by a Jesus Navas header in a hard-fought second half.

Barcelona’s goal came after Iniesta’s fantastic pass over Sevilla’s backline found Alves. The Brazilian pulled the ball down, before squaring for Bojan, an early replacement for the injured Pedrito, to fend off Caceres’ lunge and guide the ball into the net.

But Sevilla fought back after a first half that was all Barcelona. Within minutes of the restart Negredo drew Valdes wide, crossing for Navas to head home.

Barcelona had started the match with real swagger. Iniesta floated in from the left side of the midfield three to bypass the retreating Sevilla defence with a series of looping through-balls.

Messi was dropping as deep as the halfway line to collect the ball and add pace and momentum to the Blaugrana attacks, while Bojan and Villa filled the vacuum created by his absence, making rapier-like thrusts through the massed rojiblanco ranks.

Yet, with Sevilla defending with depth and resolve, the most dangerous runs were from former Sevillistas Adriano on the left, and the vibrant Alves on the right. Alves was incorrectly ruled offside as early as the 16th minute, before breaching the defence expertly for the Barcelona goal.

And Barcelona had a right to feel hard done by after a precise early Messi free kick was crazily ruled out by referee Perez Lasa.

Despite this injustice Barcelona were tightening their stranglehold on the game with every minute. Another smart, looping Iniesta pass found Messi, whose header rebounded agonisingly off the crossbar.

Sevilla’s usual suspects, Navas, Rakitic and the burly Negredo, were little more than exhausted bystanders throughout the first 45.

Still, when the teams came out for the second half, the home side took to the field with renewed energy and intent. Manzano’s players appeared to take heart from being only 1-0 down; Kanoute replaced Zokora, and started to pose questions of the high Barça backline.

Their aggressive attack combined with a fierceness in the tackle that appeared to startle the Barça players; Messi, recovering from a collision with Varas on the stroke of half time, was the chief target, but Pique, Busquets and Bojan all felt the force of this robust approach. It was now a different match and Barcelona needed to knuckle under.

They did manage to recover some of their first half fluency, carving out a handful of chances in a breathless second period. Messi went close, Iniesta crashed a long-range effort off the bar, before being denied on the line by Medel. And at the other end a crucial Valdes block denied Navas and Sevilla an unlikely lead.

There was a strong penalty shout after Bojan was felled by Navas late on, but ultimately Pep’s men had to be contented with a hard-earned point.

0-1 Bojan (min 30)
1-1 Navas (min 48)

Barça demolishes Real Sociedad

December 13th, 2010

FC Barcelona continued to demolish of the rest of La Liga, with another spectacular victory last night. This time they faced Real Sociedad, and once again the score was 5-0.

The first goal came in the eighth minute from David Villa, but Barça kept on the pressure to go 2-0 up by half time. Back on after the break was an almost immediate goal from Leo Messi; and then it took until close to the end to see two more goals in rapid succession, with another from Messi in minute 86, and a final goal in the 90th from Bojan.

Barcelona remain two points ahead of Real Madrid, who won their match against Real Zaragoza. The Catalans will be looking for Madrid to lose some points soon and allow them to open up the gap as the first half of the season draws to a close in mid of January.

Barça equals best ever score

November 22nd, 2010

Normally Real Madrid would have been happy with a 5-1 win ahead of “el classic” next Monday night. However Barcelona’s astounding 8-0 win against Almeria – the result equals their best ever score against Mallorca in 1959 – takes more than a little shine off Madrid’s result.

Not only have Barça received a massive confidence boost ahead of matches against Panathinaikos and Real Madrid in the next 8 days but at least a little of the swagger must have been taken out of Cristiano Ronaldo and co.

Leo Messi was his usual superb self and added another hat-trick to his tally of goals this season. Iniesta, Pedro, Bojan (2) and an own goal accounted for Barça’s other goals, which now puts Barcelona’s tally level with Real Madrid at 33.

It has clearly become a two horse race for the Spanish league title – third place Villarreal have just 24 points compared with 32 and 31 from Madrid and Barça.

5-1 victory against Ceuta

November 11th, 2010

An unfamiliar side walked onto the pitch last night as FC Barcelona faced AC Ceuta in the Copa del Rey. While Ceuta may be an unfamiliar sight in the Nou Camp, so was the Barça squad, with Bojan as captain.

However, despite fielding a squad largely composed of B team players, the Catalans dominated from the start. In the first seven minutes the scored two goals although Ceuta got one back 10 minutes before the break.

After the break Pedro opened the scoring for Barcelona, with Bojan adding a forth goal quart of an hour later. And with Leo Messi coming on in the 61st minute, it was almost certain that the Argentinian would add one to Barça’s tally – he did exactly that in the 68th minute.

The result means that Barça goes through to the next round of the Copa del Rey.

Last match of the season to decide La Liga title

May 10th, 2010

Saturday night’s match was the penultimate of the season, and with a single point between Barcelona and Real Madrid and could have been decisive.

To ensure no team had any kind of advantage from knowing the result of another match, the Spanish league therefore decided all matches should be played at the same time; therefore at 21:00 across Spain on Saturday, Spanish fans were glued to their own game as well as their rivals. That meant that across Catalonia fans of FC Barcelona were keeping up to date with the Real Madrid match. And while it looked for a while like they were struggling, in the end they scored a decisive 5-1 win against Athletic Bilbao.

Meanwhile Barça were in Sevilla; and while much of the match looked like it was all going their way with goals from Messi, Bojan and Pedro, the last 20 minutes gave them a scare; two goals in the 69th and 71st minute from Sevilla meant that three points started to look far from certain.

The end result was a win from both Barça and Madrid, which means the final match of the league decide the league.

Tenerife defeated in rain soaked Nou Camp

May 5th, 2010

Barcelona extended their lead over Real Madrid last night with a rain soaked 4-1 win against Tenerife last night. Again Messi scored two goals, and while the visitors kept in the game during the first half, Barça was able to outlast them in the second, when three of the goals came in.

While Barça are now 4 points clear of Real Madrid, the galacticos play Mallorca tonight and so may well close up the gap.

Barcelona collected three points against Villarreal on Saturday night in a 4-1 win, with goals from Messi, Xavi and Bojan. Meanwhile Real Madrid’s match against Osasuna looked like it would end in a 2-2 draw; however, a last minute goal from Cristiano Ronaldo ensured that Madrid kept hold of the points and are still snapping at Barça’s tail, just one point behind in the league.

Three more points for Barça

April 15th, 2010

Barcelona extended its lead at the top of the Spanish league last night after a 3-0 win over Deportivo. Although the Catalans went one goal up thanks to Bojan in the 15th minute, the players looked tired after their matches against Arsenal and Real Madrid and it was far from clear that they would keep the three points available.

However, in the 68th minute things changed, with a long shot from Pedro that soared through the air and over the defence and keeper and straight into the net. Just four minutes later it was the turn of Touré Yaya to score and Barça’s victory was in the bag.

With a much more comfortable margin both the players and crowd started to enjoy the match more; while neither team stopped trying, a Mexican wave went round the stadium, only petering out as Barça attack came close to another goal.

1-0 Bojan (min 15)
2-0 Pedro (min 68)
3-0 Touré Yaya(min 72)

Real Madrid plays against Almeria tonight, which should be an easy three points, with Barça crossing town to play Espanyol on Saturday night and then heading to Italy for Tuesday’s match against Inter Milan. Espanyol’s keeper, Idriss Carlos Kameni, was sent off last night and won’t be playing in the match against Barça.
